Dear SDSU Community,

The SDSU Strategic Planning Steering Committee has reached an important point in its year-long process to develop a strategic plan to chart our university’s future for the next five years and beyond.

Based on what we have learned from our many campus meetings earlier this semester, and on the committee’s extensive review of campus performance data and previous plans, studies and reports, a set of five strategic priorities have been developed. Before moving ahead, the committee wishes to share these proposed priorities with the campus community for review and advice.

The five proposed strategic priorities, in non-ranked order, are:

  • We are SDSU: SDSU will expand and unify our multi-campus and virtual university through a common mission and identity.
  • Students are at our Core: SDSU will be a national exemplar in providing access to success through transformational experiences in and outside of the classroom for undergraduate, graduate, and adult learners.
  • Premier Hispanic Serving Institution / Research I: SDSU will forge our own distinct identity as a premier Hispanic Serving, Research I university.
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: SDSU will be a global leader in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in research, teaching and in the community.
  • Sustainability and Innovation: SDSU will develop innovative and sustainable practices to generate revenue streams that meet the scholarly, teaching, community, and athletic aspirations of the university.

We, along with members of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, believe these priorities encompass the input we received from the community. We also believe the priorities represent a powerful set of commitments that will allow us to define a new vision and spirit for the future growth of SDSU. As part of our confirmation process, we are asking for feedback from SDSU community members regarding these priorities. This feedback will be reviewed by the committee in December. Please submit any feedback you may have via the online feedback form no later than 5 p.m. on December 2. You may also reach out to Strategic Planning Steering Committee representatives in your respective areas to ask questions. The full committee membership list is available online.

In terms of next steps in the process, the committee will meet to review the feedback from the community and finalize the priorities. We will then draft goal statements that describe what the campus will need to do (overall) to meet these priorities. In the spring, the committee will identify the key activities that will need to occur to meet identified strategic priorities and goals. Part of this process will involve greater input by expanding our subcommittees to include additional representation from the campus community. Expect to hear more about these forthcoming changes in the coming weeks.
