Dear SDSU Community,

I am writing to inform you of two, unrelated cases confirmed among an employee and a student who were recently on campus. This message is being sent in accordance with Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) requirements. Prior to ongoing repopulation plans, these messages were sent to essential campus personnel, but are now being sent to all campus employees as campus repopulation is underway. Please note: The two, unrelated cases are not connected with any previously confirmed COVID-19 cases related to campus.

Additional details and guidance are provided below.

While the risk of transmission associated with these new cases is low, it is important that all students, faculty and staff who become sick, no matter their symptoms or severity, remain home. Be attentive to your symptoms and never come to campus for work, classes or meetings if you are sick. The only exception is if you are going to Student Health Services for COVID-19 testing or, for those living on campus, you must leave your campus residence to seek medical care or get essential supplies.

About the Cases; SDSU’s Response

In the first case, the employee was last on campus on July 28. While on campus, the employee visited a residential community and College Square. All close contacts have been notified and none are required to quarantine.

In the second case, the student was last on campus on July 28. While on campus, the student visited the Jeff Jacobs JAM Center and was not in close contact with any students, faculty or staff.

The building locations where the individuals visited have been cleaned and disinfected pursuant to COVID-19 enhanced cleaning protocols. For more information about SDSU’s cleaning protocols, the information is accessible online through SharePoint site (employee login required).

Despite the low risk to the campus, this message is being shared out of an abundance of caution with the campus community, and in alignment with SDSU's COVID-19 Case Communications Protocol.

Also, SDSU will generally not disclose more specific details about the location of individuals who have been infected for privacy reasons and also because avoiding the physical location does not inherently lower a person's risk of infection; getting vaccinated and maintaining healthy practices, to include washing your hands, are among the best methods to lower your risk.

Health and Safety Guidelines

SDSU continues to encourage that all members of the campus community get a COVID-19 vaccine and also follow the updated policy on facial coverings and general prevention. All should also monitor health and well-being daily and avoid coming to work and classes when presenting COVID-19-like symptoms. Campus policy requires these behaviors when on campus or in university facilities.

Please be aware of the symptoms of COVID-19 and do the following:

  • Again, if you become ill, you are not to come to campus until you are well. We ask that you do this for your own wellbeing and for the health and safety of others.

  • Contact your healthcare provider or a medical facility if you do not feel well.

  • All faculty, staff and students should report positive COVID-19 cases or exposure concerns to SDSU — whether you test positive, or you know of a student, faculty or staff member who has tested positive or is experiencing symptoms — using the online reporting form. Doing so allows the university to ensure that students and employees receive appropriate support, and others are informed if they were in close contact with the individual who tested positive.

  • Employees who become ill should remain home, inform their supervisors and contact Human Resources by emailing [email protected].

  • All supervisors who become aware of a COVID-19 case should report the situation to their dean and associate dean, Associate Vice President or Vice President.

University Support

SDSU employees may be entitled to various benefits under applicable federal and state laws and university‐specific policies and agreements. If you believe you contracted a COVID‐19‐related illness as a result of your university employment, you may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits through the university. This may include hospital, surgical, and medical treatment, disability indemnity, and death benefits. Any member of the SDSU community can report instances of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation using the online complaint form. Individuals will be contacted after submitting information and be provided with information on resources, interim remedies, reporting procedures and, if applicable, the potential for an investigation.

Again, all on campus are encouraged to continue using these prevention techniques, including wearing facial coverings and following U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Protection guidance to protect yourself and those around you. Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds, and frequently, is one of the most important ways to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
