Dear SDSU Graduates,

Congratulations again on achieving this milestone!

The Commencement Committee is excited to share additional details for our in-person commencement ceremony this May.

As was shared in the March 5 message, the committee had previously been exploring two options for possible in-person commencements: an outdoor off-campus event, or a drive-through “CARmencement” event.

After close consultation with county public health officials and in adherence with county and state guidelines, SDSU is moving forward with hosting our May 2021 Commencement at Petco Park.

The schedule for commencement by college remains the same as what was shared in March, and is below for convenience:

  • Tuesday, May 25, 2021:
    • 9:00 a.m. – College of Education/Faculty Advancement and Student Success (Interdisciplinary Studies in Three Departments)
    • 2:00 p.m. – College of Sciences

  • Wednesday, May 26, 2021:
    • 8:00 a.m. – College of Arts and Letters
    • 1:00 p.m. – College of Engineering
    • 5:30 p.m. – Fowler College of Business

  • Thursday, May 27, 2021:
    • 9:00 a.m. – College of Health and Human Services
    • 2:00 p.m. – College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts

A livestream of the in-person ceremonies at Petco Park will be made available on the SDSU Commencement site. In addition, SDSU will provide a virtual ceremony option to accommodate our students and families who are unable to attend the in-person ceremonies. Additional details will follow.

Registration Required

All graduates planning to participate in the in-person ceremonies at Petco Park must register in advance in order to attend. On April 12, graduates will receive an email with the registration information, including ticket and guest details. Graduates will also have an opportunity to create their custom graduate slide.

Guest Policy and Current Travel Guidance

We know many of our graduates and their families are eager to make plans to attend. In alignment with California’s updated reopening guidelines for outdoor venues, we are pleased to share that a limited number of guests per student will be allowed. Information about the number of guests permitted will be shared in the April 12 message. All those in attendance will be required to wear facial coverings and to adhere to physical distancing guidelines.

It is important to note that California has travel advisories in place. After April 1, 2021, Californians will be permitted to travel more freely within the state, with the existing 120-mile advisory limit no longer in effect. However, California still actively discourages travel from out-of-state unless individuals first self-quarantine. It is important that all guests abide by both this and any of their local travel guidance before making plans.

For those who are unable or do not feel comfortable attending the in-person ceremonies, the university remains committed to providing both the livestream of the event as well as a fully virtual celebration.
