Dear SDSU Graduates,

Again, we share our congratulations to the Class of 2020! We hope you are doing well since your time at San Diego State University. With this email, we are sharing a timely update about the commencement ceremonies that were scheduled to take place this December.

In March, to recognize and honor our extraordinary and resilient graduates in as safe a way as possible given the rapid growth of the global pandemic, SDSU announced the postponement of the May 2020 commencement ceremonies to December 2020. In July, we promised to monitor local, state and federal public health guidance and provide additional details regarding the December in-person 2020 ceremonies by today, Oct. 1.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the continued restrictions against hosting large gatherings, we are unable to move forward with the December 2020 in-person ceremonies.

This decision was made with careful consideration. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose a real and significant public health risk and, for that reason, we absolutely must adhere to the county, state and federal public health guidelines and our state’s public health order. All of these requirements are designed to protect each of us. The health and safety of our graduates, their families and friends, and everyone in the SDSU community continues to be the university’s guiding principle. This is our number one priority and our most important responsibility.

We are committed to providing our December 2019, May 2020 and August 2020 graduates the opportunity to participate in a future in-person ceremony. We are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to resume recognizing our graduates in person in May 2021, and are currently exploring various scheduling and venue options.

We will continue to monitor county, state and federal public health guidelines to make the most informed decision possible. We will also continue to provide timely updates so our graduates and their families can plan ahead and make the necessary arrangements.

For those who do not plan on walking in the May 2021 in-person ceremonies, we are able to offer a partial graduation fee refund of $40, which is the full proportion that would have supported costs for an in-person ceremony. If you are considering applying for this partial refund, please fill out the Refund Request for SDSU Graduation Fee form. Please be sure to only request a refund if you know for certain you will not be participating in the May 2021 in-person ceremony. If you are planning on participating in May 2021, please do not request a reimbursement at this time.

We thank each and every one of you for your patience and understanding during this ever-evolving period of time. We look forward to celebrating our graduates in-person when it is safe to do so.

Thank you,

The SDSU Commencement Committee
