Dear Colleagues,

In response to the unprecedented disruptions the coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused, the California State University system has indicated that each of its 23 campuses are facing significant financial and other challenges. In consultation with university presidents and vice chancellors, CSU Chancellor Timothy White has directed that all campuses impose a marked slowdown in hiring practices.

Effective immediately, and following the direction of the CSU, San Diego State University will impose a temporary hiring chill for faculty and staff positions. The chill will remain in effect until further notice, and any search or hiring transaction without a written, final offer is subject to review.

The Center for Human Resources will begin contacting individual units to discuss next steps and the process for requests and justifications for hires during the chill period. The hiring chill will not impact all open or future positions in the same way and, therefore, each auxiliary unit will also communicate direction to managers and their respective areas.

Following direction from the CSU Office of the Chancellor, open positions must be halted unless approved by each campus president. Only those positions considered vital for the continuity of the SDSU’s core educational and research missions will be considered at this time. Further, new searches may be initiated if the campus president deems those positions to be critical for the day-to-day operations of the university.

Please contact the Center for Human Resources by calling 619-594-6404 with questions or for guidance relating to staff and management searches. Contact Radmila Prislin, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs - Resource Management, with questions or for guidance relating to faculty searches by emailing [email protected]. Employees of auxiliary units should contact their respective human resources manager.

The CSU continues to monitor the well-being of all campuses in the system and will make additional changes in this policy as warranted.

We sincerely appreciate your continued understanding and responsiveness to this rapidly changing environment.
